To further our unit on things that fly, we have been exploring outer space this week! The boys and girls strengthened their fine motor skills as well as hand- eye coordination by pulling and sticking stars on paper. Each child made their very own constellation. Some children wanted lots of stars where others chose just a few! We also finger-painted crescent moons. The children love to move their fingers through the smooth, cold paint.
Last week the Toddlers explored the theme of birds. During small groups, the children took turns matching shapes on eggs. They used their fine motor skills to put the eggs together and pull them apart. They also painted ovals (our shape of the month) with feathers!
We used a variety of textured papers today to create our own forest habitat. We have been learning about the forest habitat of Alaska this month and the animals who make their homes there. We have focused on the Great Gray Owl and Bald Eagle. Next week we will be talking about many more animals that we may find among the trees of the forests of Alaska. This week the Toddlers have been learning about birds. During art, the children took turns making contact paper birds. They used their fine motor skills to add the tissue paper on sheet at a time!
During small groups, the children took turns placing bugs in a line from big to small. We also talked about the bugs and different characteristics the children observed. For example,colors, wings, spots, stripes, legs, etc.
This week during group time, the Toddlers enjoyed the book, Eating the Alphabet by Lois Ehlert. To go with the book the boys and girls explored vegetables during small group. They made vegetable prints by stamping broccoli, corn, carrots, and peppers on their paper. We were sure to wear our art smocks because the painting got a little messy!
This month the Toddlers have been going over the difference between hard and soft. Each day at group time, we look around the room for objects that are soft and objects that are hard. Today during small groups, the boys and girls explored pom poms, sand, pebbles, and macaroni noodles. Together we talked about which items were hard and which were soft.
The Toddlers are learning about the letter M this week. We reviewed this letter by using our fine motor skills to cover M’s with marshmallows. The boys and girls loved squeezing the soft marshmallows and popping them in their mouth for a special treat!
The Toddlers are reviewing colors of the rainbow this month. Today during art, the boys and girls created rainbows with the simple swipe of a sponge. They were fascinated with the beautiful colors as they moved the sponge across their paper!
