This week the Toddlers are learning about the letter “I” during group time. To further the lesson, the boys and girls painted with colored ice cubes! It was a fun and messy new way to paint!

The Toddlers are having a blast exploring at the sensory tub this month. It is filled with (Easter) grass, tongs, and lots of bugs! The boys and girls used their fine motor skills to pull out the insects hidden in the grass. They love to tell us about all of the different bugs they find!
Today, we explored the diverse variety of birds that are found in the State of Alaska on our Smartboard, during group time, through photos and videos. During our Art Group we drew our own flock of birds that we thought might be a good addition to the ones we discovered.
Our focus this week will be number words. We will be reading the book, Lost Feathers, by Bruce Larkin to become familiar with number words in text. Today we started it off by building, tracing and writing number words one and two. We will continue to number ten throughout the week.
Sorting, graphing, counting, and comparing quantities of sets were all involved in our Jelly Bean Math Activity!
This month the Toddlers are learning about things that fly. Last week during group time we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and Waiting for Wings by Lois Ehlert. During art, the children strengthened their fine motor skills by squeezing watercolor filled eyedroppers on paper towels. They enjoyed observing the colors mesh together and turn into new colors. The project was finished off with a clothespin with eyes. Out came a beautiful butterfly, just like the book!
During small groups, the children took turns placing bugs in a line from big to small. We also talked about the bugs and different characteristics the children observed. For example, colors, wings, spots, stripes, legs, etc.
The color of the month is purple. The children used water colors to paint grapes purple.
To kick off their “things that fly” unit, the early 3’s read Waiting For Wings by Lois Ehlert. We sequenced the butterfly cycle and then made our own butterflies using scrapbook paper! We practiced our glue stick skills by gluing our own pieces of the butterfly to construction paper.
