  • What Can You Build with 100 Legos?

Airplanes…rocketships…battleships…houses!  The students used their creativity and their 100 legos to build something they created in their imagination.  After building their creation, students drew a sketch of what they created and labeled it.  We have some very creative architechs among us!

  • Gears Gears Gears

The manipulative center provides children with interesting materials to explore. Exploration is essential to the development of mathematical and logical thinking.  Gears along with other manipulatives in our center allow children to refine hand-eye coordination and visual perception.  Stacking, fitting connecting, stringing, comparing, matching, sorting, sequencing, building, classifying, persisting at tasks, turning knobs-children continue to build basic skills through manipulative play.  Children also learn to think logically, understand cause and effect, recognize shapes, and predict outcomes as they manipulate toys from this center.

But let’s not leave out the FUN!

  • Using Technology to Introduce Word Problems

How do we solve word problems in math?  Pictures of course…the children were introduced to word problems during our group time Math Minutes.  These will be introduced in Kindergarten as well and are one of the most challenging tasks for young mathematicians.  The key to solving math problems is to teach children strategies to solve them.  The first strategy will be drawing pictures, which we began today.  The second will be a math “sentence,” but I’ll leave that up to the Kindergarten and First grade teachers 🙂

  • Sequencing Events

We worked today in small groups on sequencing events. Sequencing is the ability to put the events of a story in the order in which they occurred.  Teaching sequencing to early learners is important because logical order of thinking is fundamental to reading and everyday life.

  • Problem-Solving with Puzzles

We practiced our problem solving skills, teamwork, and fine motor skills during small groups today as we worked together on a giant floor puzzle of the farm.
