After all of our hard work preparing for our Thanksgiving Feast we decided it was time for a dose of artistic creativity to wrap up the week! We explored a variety of abstract paintings, learned what the word abstract means and tried our hand creating our own. We have a classroom full of budding artists!
What fun we had this week preparing for our Thanksgiving Feast! We watched in amazement as our cream turned to butter by our own hands. Then we took turns mixing the ingredients for homemade bread, kneading the dough, watching it rise and baking it up to golden perfection. Our classroom smelled like fresh baked bread, it was hard not to gobble it up right when it came out of the oven! We also had a great time preparing the green beans by washing, snapping off the ends and breaking them into two. I think the kids could have done that all day. But, for the most important part of our Thanksgiving meal…the pumpkin pie. We each made our own mini pie to enjoy on Feast Day. We were delighted to see all of the children working together towards the common goal of creating a feast they could all enjoy.
Since it was so cold last week, we had a great opportunity to go into the preschool room and use the smart board! The boys and girls had so much fun doing music and movement in the “big kid room”. All the children did a great job listening and following directions! We can’t wait to use the smart board again!
We all have cubbies with our names!
We hang our backpacks by the top “Magic Loop.”
Our Sensory Tub looks just like a pond! There are a lot of frogs hiding the blue water and green grass.
Our Fine Motor Center helps to make our tiny finger muscles STRONG.
The Dramatic Play Center is a Vet Clinic! We like to work with our friends and care for the animals.
The Cincinnati Zoo came to our classroom today and brought two amazing animals to share with us. The K prep students who attended all day were able to see two DIFFERENT animals in the morning with the Preschool Class…it was such a fun experience! This afternoon we met Ghana the Hedgehog from Africa and a red footed tortoise from South America.
This week we learned about turkeys during our science day! We had a child dress up as a turkey, and we talked about the various parts of the turkey. We taped a red scarf on the child’s chin to represent the “wattle” and talked about how the male turkey changes colors when he is scared, happy, or sick.
Next we discussed how a male turkey struts around to impress the females…
…he fans out his tail feathers like a peacock and drags his wings on the ground.
We discussed the differences between domestic and wild turkeys.
In one of our small groups, we talked about turkeys having 2 stomachs. We used water bottles to represent a turkey’s stomachs. We broke up graham crackers and put berries in the bottle, then poured water into the bottle (pretending it was the “gastric juice” breaking down the food)….
We watched the “gastric juice” soften the crackers before moving to the “second stomach.”
Next we poured rocks into the bottle because turkeys swallow rocks to help with their digestion in their second stomach, called the “gizzard”. The children shook up the bottle with the rocks and watched the rocks mash up the crackers.
The end results were not pretty…but digestion just isn’t a beautiful process. 🙂
In another small group, the children drew a diagram of a turkey…including the two stomachs.
