The Toddlers have been reading “Pete the Cat: I Love My New Shoes” during group time. The books reviews colors as the cat walks around town. Also during group, the children have been playing a memory game using felt cats to work on cognitive development. The children are asked to close their eyes as one of the cats magically disappears. Then they must decide as a group which one is missing. The boys and girls are doing a great job using their memory and observing the changes.
Close your eyes tight! 🙂

This month, the Toddlers have been working on the vocabulary and concept of top, middle, and bottom. The children have lots of opportunities to build on this concept throughout the classroom. Today the boys and girls took turns placing clothing on the magnetic board.
The big math concept for the month of January is patterning. We are teaching the early 3’s how to make simple AB patterns. They should begin to be able to continue onto simple patterns. We introduced this concept using colored blocks. The children caught on quick and were continuing the red-blue-red-blue pattern in no time!
Today we read Jump Frog Jump by Robert Kalan. As a group we worked on patterning with lily pads and leap frogs. We strenghtened our math skills during small groups and made our own frog patterns. Be sure to check backpacks for our fun frog craft!
A new month means a new theme: Go Green! As we learn about recycling, the children explore the new activities in each center. We spent time today learning about the new activities and how they are used.
As we continue on with our rainforest unit, we have discovered all different kinds of animals that live in the different layers. Today, we used pom poms to make a pattern to create our very own, unique caterpillar. Using an ABABAB pattern, the children chose two colors to make their pattern.
As we wrap up our month in the Great Barrier Reef, the boys and girls practiced their ABAB patterning skills with Ms. Lori. The children had the opportunity to choose which fish they wanted to make a pattern with, then they laid out their pattern before sticking them on. What a fun way to practice our patterning skills!
