We have been learning about the number ten this week. We have learned a new song about the number ten and also how to spell it! We also had the chance to use yummy marshmallows to outline the number ten while working our small motor muscles in our hands and number recognition for number ten.
The children have been practicing their counting with these wonderful counting peg boards. This activity is great for practicing number recognition and one to one correspondence. We also talked about the color of each peg. The kids were using their fine motor skills all morning long as they practiced their counting!
Our focus this week is the number 8. The children sat on the floor, placed their paper on the carpet, and used their fine motor muscles to poke holes through the paper along the lines of the number using a toothpick. This is a prewriting activity which allows the preschoolers to begin understanding the skill of writing. We began at the top of the number (just as we would if we were writing the number with a pencil) and worked our way around to “write” the number. When they were done, they took their papers to the light table to see the tiny stars in the shape of their number eight revealed. This is an easy activity to be done at home with letters, names, shapes, or numbers. You can give your child a flashlight and help them project the object on the wall!
We are working on patterns this month in our Preschool Classroom. The kids used the counting bears to create all different kinds of patterns during small groups today. We completed AB, ABB, and AAB patterns by size and color (i.e. large-small-small; yellow-green; red-red-blue). Some of the children caught on very quickly and were creating their own patterns independently before we knew it! Way to go boys and girls! Patterning is fun activity to practice at home, especially in the kitchen. Click on the picture for some ideas…have fun!
Today we worked together to make apple crisp! We sat around the table and talked about how we use measuring cups to help us make different kinds of foods. For our apple crisp recipe we measured flour, sugar, and baking powder and stirred it all together. We sprinkled cinnamon and sugar on top of our crisp apples and put it in the oven to bake! The kids loved the smell of our wonderful creation as we all sat and ate it for snack!
The preschoolers continued their focus on the numbers 1, 2, and 3 today with Ms. Manda’s very popular sticker activity. The students identified each numeral as they covered them with small stickers (great for those ever growing fine motor skills). Then it was onto the tricky part; How many is the number 1? The number 2? And the number 3? The students were asked to place the correct amount of smiley face stickers next to the corresponding number. The kids loved this activity and were very proud of their finished product. It was a great way to show the written form of the numbers as well as the spatial form.
Well, the year has begun and our little ones have not missed a step. The children have been doing a fantastic job getting to know their new (new to some) classroom and all the different procedures and routines in “the big kid room!” We have kicked off the year with a math focus on numbers one, two and three. As we attempt to hang onto summer just a little bit longer, we used ice cream cones to work on our one-to-one correspondence skills as well as visual recognition of these numbers. We will be focusing each month on three new numbers and using them in all sorts of fun activities as we gain confidence in our all our math skills. We also worked on some of our secret art pieces for the art show, but you’ll have to wait until November to see them!
