We prepared for one of our daily homework activities today in small groups. Becoming successful writers begins with our very own names. We focused on using an uppercase first letter and lowercase letters for the remaining letters in our name. It’s time to transition to lowercase letters in our writing. Please put this into practice during this activity at home. Your child’s homework folders will be coming home in their backpacks next week.
Writing our name is a skill that we, as adults, use every day. The children have been working hard all year to form their letters correctly and in the right order. Today, the boys and girls continued to practice forming the correct letters when they used white crayon to write their name, and then paint over it with water color. Instantly, the children could see their name in white appear through the paint!
During small groups today, the students began to prepare for the homework that they will be doing in a few weeks. They used letter tiles to build their name then wrote their name independently. This will be one of the activities that will be in their homework folders that will be sent home after Parent Orientation Night.
Today during group time we played a game called “Who’s in the Present?” ALl of the children had to close their eyes while one child was picked to go inside of the present. When they heard “open your eyes!”, they couldn’t wait to look around and try and figure out who was missing from the group! If they were having a hard time, they got a clue if it was a boy or a girl. When they made their final guess, we turned the present around to find out who was inside! This was the highlight of their afternoon! All we kept hearing was “Can we do it again!!”
Today in small groups, we practiced the movements the children need to form different letters in the alphabet. We worked on slanted, vertical and horizontal lines on our map of the forest. Then, we had a chance to use our fun Magic Wipe Boards to practice writing our names! They did a great job. Writing with your child even at this young age is a wonderful activity to become more accustomed to holding the pencil/marker correctly and building the strength in the hands that is needed for more fluent writing in the future. The best place to start is with the letters in their name! There is also a wonderful series of prewriting and letter writing books by Kumon. Today was a great day for puzzles, but not just any puzzles…puzzles of our very own names! The students put together puzzles of their names as well as the names of their friends.
A child’s name is quite possibly the most important word in their young and growing vocabulary and therefore can be a great avenue to letter recognition. They begin to not only memorize the letters in their own names but also the letters in the names of their classmates. The children took great ownership in their name puzzles and were excited to take them home to show to their families.
We will use our names for many activities and learning games throughout the school year and these puzzles are great preparation and practice for what’s to come.
