Scissor skills, proper form, and cutting ability is an ongoing process in the preschool years. Strong fine motor muscles and an understanding of how to hold scissors both play a role in scissor skill development. The preschools today were introduced to cutting continuously rather than just snips. This is a skill that requires practice, practice, practice! We have been talking about igloos, icerbergs, cold weather, and the kinds of clothes you wear in the cold here in the early 3’s. Today we put on our winter gear to build an igloo out of blocks! The children used their fine motor muscles to put on their gear and their gross motor to build the igloos.
We practiced our fine motor muscles and hand-eye coordination while imagining what it is like to catch dinner if we were visiting Antarctica. The preschoolers have made a lot of progress with their fine motor muscles this school year, this serves as great foundation for handwriting skills and self-help skills (buttons, zippers, mittens).
The early 3’s are really working hard to recognize their numbers…today they named the number and then counted out many beads matched the number in the cup. They got in a fine motor work out when they picked up the small beads with their pincher fingers. This is an easy and fun game to make with your child and do at home!
Throughout the month, the Toddlers have been learning all about their senses. Today we focused on touch. The boys and girls molded and manipulated playdoh while strengthening their fine motor skills. We also worked on sorting today. We practiced placing soft and hard balls into the correct container. The children did a great job determining where the objects belong.
