Our reading group book this week was titled, Birds, by Bruce Larkin. We focused on the sight words this and is throughout the book. The students were also introduced to the reading strategy, looking for a small word in a big word (i.e. is in this). After reading the book all week, we created our own sentences and designed an illustration to match. The students also put into practice their new knowledge of creating an interesting illustration by adding details. They did a GREAT job!
We have been working on a more difficult book during reading groups this week. It contains our previous sight words: is ~ can along with our new word~we. Most pages contain multiple sentences which is requiring the students to pay close attention to each and every word that they are reading as they track the words with their finger. This book also contains missing words that the children added by listening to the sounds in the word. They’re working hard as we continue our journey to becoming readers!
What would you do if you traveled to space? What would you see? We read the story, On the Moon, by Anna Milbourne to discover who can travel to the moon, how they get there, and what the moon is like. We responded to the reading during writer’s workshop. Our focus today was adding details to our illustrations and adding labels to help our “audience” understand what we are trying to say. What an amazing job they did! I think I even saw our new sight word on one or two. They are on their way to becoming wonderful writers!
It is important to strengthen all of the muscles in the hand and wrist while working on the handwriting process. Forcing little fingers, hands, and wrists to move in new ways is great for developing stronger muscles. Writing on a vertical surface challenges the wrist to use different muscles than writing on a flat surface usually does. The preschoolers worked on recognizing their names. A fun way to work on these muscles at home is writing with window markers or using foam letters/numbers on the walls in the bath tub. Have fun working those muscles!
