  • Week 3 – Cooking Summer Playdate

Do you know the muffin man?  We baked up a storm during the cooking summer playdate this week.  We all worked together to make blueberry muffins on Monday.

If You Give A Mouse A Cookie…   We used the big mixer to make chocolate chip cookies from scratch on Tuesday.  The toddlers had one for snack and one to take home!  We also watched the mouse jump on the parachute!

We had mini donuts on Wednesday after reading If You Give A Dog a Donut!  We also worked on a donut craft and Kona Ice outside!

Pancakes on Thursday!  Each child got to choose a color and help flip the pancake!  Yummy snack!

We also worked on cupcake crafts, played in discovery bins, had fun outside, and enjoyed music time with Ms. Joanie.  A fun week!

  • Pumpkin Muffins!

Cooking is a fun way to use all five senses.  Last Friday we made pumpkin mini muffins.  This was an easy three ingredient recipe so we all took a turn adding items (1 box of spice cake mix, 1 can of pumpkin puree, and 4oz of apple sauce (one little snack cup).  Chocolate chips are optional.  We put all the ingredients into a large ziplock bag then squished it all together.  I cut off the corner of the baggie to squeeze into greased mini muffin tin.  It was fun, easy and delicious.  Bake 375 for 18 minutes.  This would be fun to do at home on a cold winter day!

  • Five Little Pumpkins

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate…  We have had so much fun with this little song.  We did an art project with pumpkin stickers, read several book versions, put 5 pumpkins on the magnet board, and acted the song out.  We also made yummy pumpkin muffins, decorated mini pumpkins with washi tape, and played hot pumpkin (a version of hot potato).  Our sensory bin for the month has been pumpkin seeds with scoops and tins to “make pumpkin pie”.  We also plan to use all of our senses to explore the outside and inside of a pumpkin!  Happy orange October!

  • Preschool Thanksgiving Feast

The preschool class celebrated their Thanksgiving Feast last week.  The week leading up to it, we learned a little about the first Thanksgiving and prepared almost all of the food that we ate.

We made homemade applesauce in the crockpot.  We got to crank the apple peeler and break the slices apart.

We made individual pumpkin pie cheesecakes and we got to smell the yummy pumpkin!

We prepared green beans by snapping the yucky ends off.

We made homemade bread by mixing it in a Ziploc bag.  We squished it in the bag to get it all mixed up after taking turns adding the ingredients.

We also made our own butter by shaking heavy cream.  We had to shake for a VERY LONG time!

  • Preschool Feast Day is Here!

What’s better than sitting down and enjoying the fruits of your labor with good friends?  We had such a wonderful time today enjoying each other’s company as we finally got to eat the foods we had been working so hard to prepare.  The children enjoyed their homemade applesauce, homemade bread with their own handmade butter, fresh green beans, corn, mashed potatoes and turkey.  We ate our entire fresh fruit turkey we worked so hard to make…and of course our mini pumpkin pies.

  • Preschoolers Preparing for their Thanksgiving Feast

What fun we had this week preparing for our Thanksgiving Feast!  We watched in amazement as our cream turned to butter by our own hands.  Then we took turns mixing the ingredients for homemade bread, kneading the dough, watching it rise and baking it up to golden perfection.  Our classroom smelled like fresh baked bread, it was hard not to gobble it up right when it came out of the oven!  We also had a great time preparing the green beans by washing, snapping off the ends and breaking them into two.  I think the kids could have done that all day.  But, for the most important part of our Thanksgiving meal…the pumpkin pie.  We each made our own mini pie to enjoy on Feast Day.  We were delighted to see all of the children working together towards the common goal of creating a feast they could all enjoy.

  • Learning About Cows and What We Can Make With Their Milk

This past week we talked about cows and how they make milk for us to drink and use to make other foods.

Ms. Susan planned a special small group where the children got to help make whipped cream and butter.

We had to shake, shake, SHAKE the containers of cream to turn it into butter:

Then the children got to help make whipped cream!

In another small group, we practice “milking a cow” by squeezing the water out of a glove and into a pail.

  • Cats and Cupcakes!

Today at Flour Child Bake Shop we learned, if you give a cat a cupcake,  he would ask for some sprinkles.
