Body awareness and gross motor movement are both extremely important at the preschool age. Children are developing and strengthening gross and fine muscles that create more opportunities for independence as well as abilities to hold a crayon properly and form letters and numbers. Today we touched on all three at once! The children worked on number recognition while tip-toeing the proper formation of 1, 2, 3. They had a ball! This is an easy game to play at home with any kind of tape on the floor!
There are many benefits to incorporating yoga into our children’s lives. Yoga for young children develops body awareness, language, good listening skills, cooperation and powers of observation. It teaches pre-kindergarten children about nature, their environment and inspires their imaginations. They learn by playing, singing, moving and imitating. Looking at the smiling faces below, it’s clear that FUN may be reason we love it!
Yoga Kids by Marsha Wenig is a great book for guiding preschoolers through poses and relaxation. A lot of our daily yoga relaxation is based off the fun ideas in this book.
Today we stretched our bodies while channeling our inner surfer! We pretended to ride the waves of Hawaii.
Ask your preschooler to teach you Bunny Breath, you will be sure to see a very scrunched up nose! This is how we get oxygen to our brains to help us during yoga.
Namaste!
We are raising children in such a busy world with busy parents, video games, and competitive sports. These influences can be stressful to our little ones over a long period of time. This busy pace can have a large impact on their inner joy-usually not for the better. Children’s yoga can help counter these pressures by learning self-health and relaxation techniques. Early yoga can also act as a physical activity that is not competitive. Children learn body awareness; enhance flexibility, coordination and strength. Yoga also encourages better concentration and an improved sense of calmness and relaxation. We thought this was a great way to end the year!
