  • Rainbow Writing With the Letter R

When learning our letter sounds, it is important to make connections between the written letter and the sound it represents.  These letter-sound connections create the foundation for young readers.  While learning the letter R, the children were able choose different colored roller painters.  While rolling out the letter R, Ms. Lori talked about things that begin with the letter R, such as rollers and rainbow.

  • Discovering the Texture of an Adobe Home

Ms. Lori gave us the opportunity to learn about Adobe Homes today during our art experience.  We learned that adobe homes are found in Mexico and throughout the southwestern United States.  We also learned that these homes are made of a mixture of sand, clay and water and formed into bricks before building They are used in these areas because they help keep the homes cool in the heat of the desert.  We used a sandy mixture to paint our own adobe home in a desert environment.

  • Group Time

As a group we sing our Welcome song, encourage the children to talk about the weather, our letters and numbers and what we will be doing for the day. We also talk about what to expect for tomorrow including events that will take place in the future, if the day is predictable and the children are prepared, we will have a more successful transition throughout the day.

At group we do a series of simple body movements that are used to integrate all areas of the brain and to build self esteem. We include up, down, in, out, big and little. This also helps the children to focus and is a positive way to get the wiggles out.

We also take the opportunity to model the craft. At this age the children are visual learners and learn through example.

  • We are Sculptors!

We put the paints away on Monday during Art Class as Ms Penny taught us about Edgar Degas and what it means to be a sculptor!  We worked on a special sculpture for the art show based on Mexican Artwork, then used our creativity to create our own masterpiece!

  • Great Start to a New Week!

We learned about the different blankets that are made in Mexico during small groups today.  We designed and decorated our own Mexican style blanket with Ms. Barbara and read Pretty Blankets by Bruce Larkin during reading groups.  As a special treat we we visited Bruce Larkin’s website and listened to him read his book to us as we watched the animation.  We were introduced to three new sight words today, this, on, and has.  These words are found in our new book for the week.  We reviewed these words along with our previous words in a fun game of Bingo.  We also found a few of our animal friends we have been learning about on our Bingo Cards.   Keep reviewing the sight words during homework time!
