Why do we write? We make lists, we share stories, we share ideas, we share our feelings and much more. We began our writing journey in K Prep through the introduction to K Prep Journals. We begin the year with prompts then as the year progresses we will encourage our budding writers to come up with their own ideas to share in their journals. Once we get the hang of it, the students will have the opportunity to share their journals with their friends durning our Author’s Chair time. I was impressed to see some amazing drawings with details, some letters and even some words! These journals will come home at the end of the year. They are such a great way to see the growth of your child’s writing journey throughout the school year.
Each month the toddlers focus on one color. September is Yellow! We have read Hello Yellow and Little Bea, watched and sang along to Heidi’s Hello Yellow video, selected counted and named yellow items in the mystery can, had a yellow hunt in our classroom, played with yellow play-dough, tasted yellow lemons, and used half lemons as a stamper to make circle prints! We will continue to explore yellow throughout the month.
In Preschool we started learning about the letters in the alphabet and the sounds they make. We had a fun week with all our Aa activities!
Why do we focus on scissor skills in K Prep? There are many benefits to cutting with scissors, including:
We tried out the Owl Scissor Skills Activity from our friends at From the Pond!
Preschool Prep had a lesson in sharing! We read Should I Share My Ice Cream? by Mo Willems and then pretended to share our ice cream with one another; asking, “please?” and replying “thank you!” We discussed how we share all of our toys in our classroom, the same as we shared our ice cream.
Block shadow matching! Our courtyard classroom activity involved matching blocks to their outline on butcher paper
Fine motor skills: Preschool Prep will be working on letter formation in the coming months, and practicing our fine motor skills will help with this development. Lacing is a great fine motor skill to help strengthen the pincer grasp, which is holding objects between the thumb and index finger, such as you would when you hold a pencil.
Block shape match
Bubblewrap Beehive creation!
More lacing! We laced felt pieces onto krazy straws, but we also had to match the colored felt pieces to the right colored straws. They all worked together to make sure all of the pieces were filled up onto the straws.
